Mobile Fidelity - Fender PrecisionDeck

There’s nothing like hearing the gentle “thump” of a needle after it drops down on a vinyl record and, seconds later, enjoying the glorious sounds of an LP. Now, imagine the magic of that beloved ritual with a turntable that authoritatively plays any kind of music, including the timeless albums recorded by many of the all-time greats — Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Bill Frisell, Muddy Waters, Donald “Duck” Dunn for starters — who played the very instruments that inspired its design. The result of an unprecedented collaboration, the Fender x MoFi PrecisionDeck turntable makes that experience possible.

The Fender x MoFi PrecisionDeck, is a high-performance turntable in every way, with gorgeous looks that resonate with decades of music history. The PrecisionDeck utilizes the same wood, swamp ash, as the famed Fender Precision Bass® guitar. The blanks of swamp ash are sourced, milled, and finished in the iconic three-colour sunburst by Fender USA. The components are designed and built by MoFi, and the deck is assembled, featuring technology from the award-winning UltraDeck with testing and setup by MoFi at the company’s factory in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Individually Badged and Numbered

An instant collector’s item limited to only 1,000 units, PrecisionDeck comes individually numbered and badged, distinguished with a nameplate not unlike the metal serial-number plates found on Fender guitars. Both practical and attractive, the statement feature is another way the turntable directly ties into the rich histories of Fender and Mobile Fidelity.

Iconic Tricolour Sunburst Finish

Developed by Fender in the 1950s, the same tricolour sunburst pattern famously found on Precision Bass, Stratocaster, and Telecaster guitars graces PrecisionDeck, each of which is carefully hand-painted by Fender. Prized by guitar collectors and known for its soft warmth, the special urethane finish ages extremely well and lends to exceptional durability.

Isolated AC Synchronous Motor

Our stepped-pulley AC motor provides excellent speed stability for pitch accuracy and rhythmic drive. The Delrin® pulley has two positions for 33 1/3 and 45 RPM speed selection. Motor vibrations are kept away from the platter and stylus by using advanced dampening materials that decouple the motor from the rest of the turntable.

Ultra Tonearm

Custom-developed and manufactured in the USA, the 10-inch Ultra tonearm uses smooth, high-quality ball bearings for low friction in the vertical and horizontal plane so all you hear is what is in the grooves. Cardas Audio wiring maintains signal purity from the headshell leads all the way through to the high-quality, gold-plated RCA connectors.

Precise and Accurate

The sound-first fundamentals extend to the custom-developed Ultra tonearm, a 10-inch straight aluminium gimbaled bearing design whose rigidity and tracking prowess translates into accurate information retrieval. Its adjustable tracking force, VTA, azimuth, and enhanced anti-skate grant you profound options for tweaks and adjustments. And there's more. A hardened steel inverted bearing system provides UltraDeck smooth, quiet playback stability. Everything about the PrecisionDeck relates to preserving and playing back the actual sound on your LPs. It's why Mobile Fidelity equips PrecisionDeck with high-quality gold-plated connectors shielded by a copper foil box to prevent airborne RF noise.

Hardened Steel Inverted Bearing

Our hardened-steel inverted bearing system is designed for smooth, quiet rotational stability. The extremely low tolerance combination of steel, bronze, and sapphire—found in much more expensive turntables—will provide you many years of high-performance playback.

1.3-Inch Delrin® Platter

The PrecisionDeck features a massive 1.3-inch Delrin® platter. The increased mass creates blacker sonic backgrounds and a lower noise floor. Delrin® is a next-generation polymer developed by Dupont. In the world of audio, Delrin's® highly crystalline structure presents a wonderful impedance match to vinyl records, effectively grounding unwanted noise and keeping it away from the stylus.

Meticulous Design and Evaluation

Advanced technology, user-friendly features, and unflappable design elements ensure phenomenal playback—ultimately bringing the sound of Mobile Fidelity’s famous studio into your home.

Like all Mobile Fidelity products, every piece on PrecisionDeck derives from tireless experimentation, meticulous evaluation, and listening tests. All parts and materials are chosen and developed strictly on the basis of their sonic benefits. Mobile Fidelity's meticulous oversight of every detail begins with a 6.8-pound, 1.3-inch platter comprised of Delrin, a high-strength, low-friction polymer selected because its highly crystalline structure makes for a great impedance match with vinyl and grounds unwanted noise. Similarly, and acting in concert with cutting-edge dampening matter, the Delrin pulley – which comes with positions for 33 1/3 and 45RPM speeds – keeps motor vibrations away from the platter and stylus. Speaking of the motor: PrecisionDeck's 300RPM isolated AC synchronous type delivers excellent speed stability for stellar pitch accuracy and rhythmic drive.

MoFi MasterTracker Cartridge

MoFi cartridges are designed by looking at where a record starts: On a cutting lathe like the model used at Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. MasterTracker features a V-Twin dual-magnet generator that mirrors the layout of the cutting head that originally makes a record’s grooves. Employing two low-mass, powerful magnets aligned in a V formation parallel with the record grooves, MasterTracker accurately extracts music from your LPs and features stellar tracking ability.

The well-damped billet aluminium body controls resonances for tight, accurate bass reproduction. MasterTracker has the lightest-weight magnets in the Tracker Series, delivering the kind of detailed, open performance normally attributed to high-end moving-coil cartridges. By using a Micro-Line diamond stylus shaped like the cutting head of a record lathe, MasterTracker traces vinyl groove walls with microscopic precision.

Anti-Vibration Feet by HRS

Any vibration of the stylus that is not created by the grooves in the record is a distortion that will mask musical detail. Developed in conjunction with the engineering team at Harmonic Resolution Systems, the world leader in vibration isolation for audio equipment, the included MoFi anti-vibration feet isolate your turntable from bad vibrations.

Featuring an outer housing comprised of milled aluminium, the 1.578-inch-tall feet (1.37 to 1.45 inches when loaded) dramatically lower the noise floor across the entire audio band all the while doing no harm in the frequency and phase domain, allowing you to hear more detail, nuance, texture, tone, focus, and clarity from all of your music.

A Legendary Collaboration

The journey of the PrecisionDeck has been an authentic collaboration between two respected brands within the industry. MoFi is renowned for remastering some of the greatest records of all time, and collaborating on a turntable with the Fender brand, whose instruments are widely featured on those albums, was a natural fit.

“Working with the entire Fender team has been a great pleasure and we could not be more excited or proud of the result. From the beginning, creating this turntable has been a joy. The ideas on how to leverage both companies’ strengths and create something authentic and special just flowed. With the very first prototype, we knew we were really on to something, as folks would stop by to admire what we were creating.”
MoFi Electronics President, John Schaffer

A Turntable 75 Years in the Making

Along the journey, MoFi learned of a story that convinced them that the PrecisionDeck was fated to be. In the early 1940s, Leo Fender was operating Fender® Radio Service in Fullerton, Calif. His primary business was repairing home audio equipment—radios, TVs, and hi-fi sets. In 1945, Fender, with fellow inventors Doc Kauffman and Clifton Abbott, designed and patented a turntable of his own. Fender ultimately sold the turntable rights in 1945 for $5,000 in advance royalties and used the proceeds as seed money to fund the K&F Manufacturing Corporation with Kauffman. K&F manufactured lap steel guitars, amplifiers, and the record player for a short time before Kauffman sold his share in the company to Fender. Undaunted by Kauffman’s departure, Leo Fender established Fender Electric Instruments in 1946. Now, 75 years later, Fender’s name is once again gracing a technologically advanced turntable.

True to its name, PrecisionDeck arrives meticulously built, with every part and function having gone through extensive testing to ensure optimal performance. Equipped with its own equivalent of a guitar pickup — in the form of Mobile Fidelity Electronics' acclaimed MasterTracker cartridge — for easy setup and operation, the 25.5-pound PrecisionDeck features a heavy 1.3-inch Delrin platter that delivers deep-black backgrounds and a fantastically low noise floor. A 250RPM isolated AC synchronous motor, 10-inch straight aluminium gimbaled bearing Ultra tonearm with Cardas Audio wiring, hardened-steel inverted bearing system, anti-vibration feet, and a dust cover further complete a gorgeous, U.S.A.-made turntable devoted to preserving the authentic sound found in the grooves of vinyl LPs while allowing listeners simple finetuning options.

Control That Extends from the Mastering Studio to the Factory to Your Home

Prestige doesn't come easy – or cheap. To meet all its specific needs and demands, Mobile Fidelity established a new, dedicated facility in Michigan to build the majority of its products in the USA. While an uncommon and expensive endeavour in today's audio industry, in-house manufacturing is the only way to maintain total quality control and create products that live up to the exacting standards Mobile Fidelity established over the past four decades with music releases. The approach cuts both ways, giving you the security and confidence that the Mobile Fidelity product(s) you own is built to – and built to perform at – the highest specifications.
