Vincent Audio SA-32 Pre Amplifier And SP-332 Power Amplifier Review

"The essence of this Vincent combination is refined musicality. It goes about its music-making business in a subtle yet involving way that's really quite charming on its own terms. The brand has acquired a cult following among cash-strapped audiophiles, and listening to the SA-32/SP-332 you can see – or indeed hear – why. Tonally it's pretty smooth and even, with just a touch of silk up top and warmth down below. In the midband things aren't too in your face, but there's still a good degree of detail. It conjures up a nicely capacious soundstage and has a good reserve of power allied to decent dynamic headroom. The overall impression is of an affordable pre-power that does a lot of things really rather well."

A fantastic power amplifier improved

The SP-332 is an enhancement of the hugely popular SP-331, which upgrades it with higher quality inputs at the rear and dual speaker outputs. The dual speaker outputs can be switched on and off individually with the switches at the front. This allows you to easily set up two pairs of loudspeakers, perhaps in two different rooms, to listen to. There are unbalanced RCA inputs on the rear, as well as balanced XLR inputs. This makes the SP-332 compatible with a huge range of preamplifiers. Select which input you're using with the switch on the back.

The best of two worlds

The SP-332, with its hybrid design, combines the advantages of both vacuum tube and transistor amplification. Valve amplification provides the classic warm tone that audio enthusiasts crave. Combined with transistor solid-state technology, the result is a power amp that is efficient in terms of power consumption, and in sound is timelessly rich. This is a main amplifier with little competition and one that never loses control when working with even the most demanding of loads.

Backed by plenty of power

In the power supply, a 500W toroidal transformer provides the power necessary for constant. Elcos with a capacity of 80,000 µF "buffer" them. Transferred to the sound creates a "dry", powerful and deep bass fundament. The stabilization of the voltage is handled by a 6N15 tube.

Looks as good as it sounds

At first glance immediately recognizable - the new VU meters on the front panel. The color backlight and the status LEDs can be switched between red, blue, green and white using a sliding switch on the back.

Scandinavian design and build quality

The MB2.5 B has a solid foundation in the Nordic design tradition. It is simple, sleek, elegant and visually square when seen directly from the front, and curved and organic when seen from an angle.

The rounded edges of the cabinet reduce diffraction and minimize the sonic imprint on the frequency response. It does not matter if your home features a modern or classic decor, or anything in-between, the timeless design of the MB2.5 B will fit in any space.

The internal construction has been changed, in order to optimize airflow which combined with the minimalistic use of damping-material has created a very dynamic and linear low-frequency reproduction

The old acoustically vented cabinets have now been replaced with a ported cabinet, which is tuned for optimal impulse response - resulting in a more linear, dynamic and detailed low-end reproduction, while at the same time making in-room placement of the speaker much easier and versatile.

Ribbon Tweeters

It was clear to Scansonic from the very beginning, that some core techniques from the Raidho speakers would be of great importance: The speakers had to be designed around a ribbon tweeter that works with at super lightweight diaphragm that is sealed around the edges to allow for a seamless transition to the midrange region.

The MB-B ribbon tweeter has a membrane with an extremely low mass. It is formed by a Kapton-aluminum sandwich that is only 20 um thick, and the resulting mass is app. 0.03g, which is approximately 50 times less than any conventional textile, ceramic, beryllium or diamond dome. The lower mass translates directly into higher resolution and less material colouration.

Redesigned Crossover

The crossovers have been completely redesigned. This has resulted in a much more linear and natural sound, which is clearly visible throughout the whole MB-B range. The crossover has been designed to time-align all drive units at listening distance. The result is a speaker which not only presents a large and precise soundstage, it also boasts a timing that will make your foot tap and put a big smile on your face!

Weaved Carbon Cones

For the MB-B series, Scansonic developed a ridged, dustcap free, carbon membrane. By carefully optimizing the shape and stiffness, Scansonic has succeeded in making a very quiet woofer that blends beautifully with the ribbon tweeter. The woofer has an overhung magnet system, with long linear stroke and excellent bass performance.

The drivers are carefully designed to match the slim enclosure. The carbon-cone benefits from a very low weight, which in combination with the powerful magnet system, offers a very dynamic sound.

A nice side effect of these design choices is that the break-in period has been reduced greatly to around 100 hours, meaning you can hear the best sound your speakers can offer sooner.

Sounds great with any amp

The Scansonic MB-B speakers are, by design, easy loads on practically any amplifier. The impedance doesn't drop below 4 ohms on any model, and the sensitivity is high on all models.

We will recommend a high-quality amplifier at any time, but it doesn't matter if it is a tube amplifier, solid-state, a Class D, or a Class A. The MB-B speakers are designed to sound great with anything, you connect them to.

Developed Specifically for Audio

It is important to understand that music passing through the speaker cable, is actually an AC voltage, so when voltage passes through twisted wire, there will be additional magnetic fields. Tributaries Star-Quad design not only alternates the positive and negative signal conductors but also alternates the twisted lays in each multi-gauge conductor. Alternating lays cancels all levels of magnetic distortion. The end result is a neutral sounding cable.

Star-Quad Geometry

Tributaries Series 4, 6 and 8 speaker cables all include a StarQuad design. Star-Quad speaker cables are designed with four conductors, all wound together, in a "positive, negative, positive, negative" configuration. The cable is produced such that all 4 wires are evenly twisted together keeping each conductor the same distance from the centre and ensuring each positive conductor is next to each negative conductor. Developed Specifically for Audio

The precision twisted Twin-Axial design has dedicated conductors for the positive signal and negative return signal plus a heavy shield that is connected to the source end only. In this design the shield will capture any induced interference sending it to ground at the source end thereby isolating noise away from the input stage of the load. This configuration ensures a clear signal transfer with overall noise rejection as close to balanced as possible. The end result is a neutral sounding cable.

The conductors are insulated using Polyethylene because its transparency is similar to Teflon but without the harshness in the high frequencies. Polyethylene is flexible and has a sound quality that is warm and balanced. The shields have 360° coverage to keep noise from entering the signal path. Series 6 and 8 cables include copper braided shields with lower resistance for trapping induced noise current.
