DACs

DACs, or digital to analogue converters, are necessary for listening to digital audio information on your hifi speaker system. If your system uses a receiver, it likely has a DAC built in. Some amplifiers have a built-in DAC as well, however a separate device can often provide a higher quality analogue signal. Internal DACs are usually not equipped to handle clocking errors, resulting in “jitter” during playback. An external or outboard DAC can more easily prevent this issue, and is highly recommended if you would like to fully preserve the quality of your audio system. Portable DACs with USB connections are available, as well as full devices utilizing vacuum tube technology. These will provide the highest quality audio available.
