"Which headphones should I buy?" Ask five different people what you should get, and you'll probably get five different answers. This is because what you need will be different to what they need and value. Your ears will be a different shape, and your head may be a different size, what and where you need them will differ. Sounds funny, but these are only a couple of factors which will be on your checklist of things to consider when buying the right headphones.
We can invest substantially in our gadgets and devices, including our phones, tablets, hi-fi and gaming systems, but then say to ourselves, "What’s the cheapest pair of headphones I can get that won't sound really bad?" This can be where it all falls apart, because your listening experience can be greatly affected by the headphones you're listening from. If you choose cheap and cheerful, you may be totally disappointed in how your favourite album sounds, and miss out on the quality of the intended audio experience.
What style is going to suit your needs? The first thing you need to ask yourself is "What will I be using them for?" Are you going to be exercising with them, listening to music on the train, playing Xbox, watching movies, listening to CDs or MP3s? Below are descriptions of the different types available, and their individual benefits. Consider these explanations when deciding which is right for you.
Earbuds:
Available in 2 styles, some rest at the entrance of your ear (earphones), and others sit further within the ear canal (earbuds). Both these styles are really portable and are suitable for mobile applications such as exercising. Keep in mind that you will probably not get the same quality of sound as an over ear model, as it is harder to reduce the external noise.
Headphones:
The obvious difference between earphones and headphones is the size. A lot bulkier, the headphone sits over the head, usually with an adjustable band. Many models are foldable, so transporting them is easier these days. The cups are designed to sit either on or over your ear. On-Ear headphones rest on top of the ear, where over-ear headphones encompass the ear. The over-ear style is most successful at noise reduction, and allows for a magnificent aural experience. Either are ideal when you are seeking a fuller experience.
It’s not unusual to have more than one pair of headphones either. Because we lead such busy and diverse lives, as with many of our other activities, this is not a one size fits all scenario. Consider investing in a pair of earphones and headphones, look after them well and you will always have the right equipment for the situation.
