In a sentimentally popular follow up to the successful 2011 film similarly titled, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel sees the original ensemble cast return together with some new faces. Word is that the cast were so keen to work together again, the script had to be developed to include characters which were not originally penned to return.
Chemistry abounds as fan favourites Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy rekindle the cheeky banter which made the first film so embraceable. Throwing in the charm of Richard Gere just helps to add a new dimension to the film.
Dev Patel returns as Sonny, the hotel’s manager and part owner. The hotel has been such a success that he hatches a plan to grow into a chain of hotels by buying another run down establishment and recreate the success of the first. To realise his ambition, Sonny needs financial support and turns to Evergreen, an American based retirement company headed by a progressive investor played by David Strathairn.
Despite the characters desire to escape the hustle and bustle in the first film, seeking rest and relaxation in another country, we watch as these same characters become busier than ever. Keen to be involved in the new venture, they hope to re-capture the ambience of the first.
This is where we meet two new guests played by Tamsin Greig and Richard Gere. Sonny is expecting an inspector to make a secret visit to his establishment, and he presumes that this must be him. Sonny showers them with attention at the expense of his other guests.
This sequel gives its’ audience the delightful opportunity to spend a little more time with the endearing ensemble. It is certain to be a popular feel good movie choice this weekend.
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is in cinemas nationally this Thursday 26th February.
