To keep receiving free-to-air TV after the digital switchover, you will need a television that can receive digital signals (built-in digital tuner). It is not necessary to purchase a new television, because almost all current analogue televisions will be capable of receiving a digital signal with the help of a digital set top box or digital TV recorder. You will need one of these devices per analogue television you want to convert. If you are not sure whether your television has a built-in digital tuner, you can easily check. If you can watch ABC2, ABC3 or SBS TWO, then you can be certain that you are
already watching digital.
In some parts of the country, digital services are broadcasts on channel 12. This channel has never been used for analogue signals, so many antennas were not designed to receive this channel. As a result, you may notice some difficulty in picking up this channel. If so, it is recommended that you replace your antenna with a model which is capable of receiving all channels, including channel 12. Selby’s digital ready antenna is suitable for this application.
It is important to have your antenna correctly installed in order to receive an acceptable signal. Using a qualified antenna installer is the easiest way, however if you are a DIY’er, check out our blog on “Antenna Connectors”, and “My Switch”, which is a helpful app to assist in finding the ideal reception in your area. Some areas are particularly difficult to receive adequate signal, so may benefit from masthead amplifiers or other such devices. If you are turning on digital for the first time, you will need to tune your television or set top box to be able to receive the new channels. Most will have an auto-tune function, which will automatically find the best reception from your local transmission towers. Each model of television or set top box will be unique, so it is important that you read your instruction manual to achieve the best results.
