Speaker Revolution is On the Rise: Sonos Acquires Netherlands-Based Company Mayht for $100M

Earlier this year, Sonos announced the acquisition of an innovative tech company based in the Netherlands, Mayht. The Dutch startup is well known for being on the forefront of game-changing audio technology. They recently partnered with Exeger to create a prototype of a light-powered bluetooth speaker. Yes, you heard that right, a bluetooth speaker that utilizes Exeger's Powerfoyle material that can turn ambient and natural light into power.

Mayht is the company behind Heartmotion, new audio technology within the core of speaker drivers to allow for speakers up to ten times more compact than current models -- without sacrificing bass output or audio quality. The new type of transducer could revolutionize the speaker market by enabling big sound in small packages.

Clearly, Mayht caught the eyes of larger speaker developers with these releases, and signed an acquisition with Sonos in a $100 million cash-only deal. Both parties are showing excitement for the acquisition and the new possibilities it will open up.

"Mayht's breakthrough in transducer technology will enable Sonos to take another leap forward in our product portfolio," says Sonos CEO Patrick Spence. "This strategic acquisition gives us more incredible people, technology and intellectual property that will further distinguish the Sonos experience, enhance our competitive advantage, and accelerate our future roadmap."

Mattias Scheek, the CEO of Mayht, also expresses his enthusiasm. "We are very excited and proud to become a part of Sonos. Our dream has always been to set a new standard in the audio industry. The integration of our technology into Sonos products will further revolutionize high quality sound."

Both companies expect the acquisition to lead to some transformative developments in speaker technology and plan to bring this tech into the public market. "We can finally show our technology in many different kinds of applications, from soundbars to small subwoofers to small voice assistants speakers, which we believe will disrupt the markets..." Scheek explains.

The new developments from Mayht seem to align with what Sonos has been doing with their recent products, pushing towards speakers that are lighter, smaller, and more portable. While specific details on new collaborations remain slim, Sonos has hinted at sharing more of their plans in the near future.
