RoboCop is the latest “remake” about to hit the big screen. In 1987 we saw the much acclaimed original movie. The first film was followed up by luke-warm reception for RoboCop2 in 1990 then by RoboCop3 in 1992. This “re-boot” is set in the year 2028, where “multinational conglomerate” OmniCorp are the leaders in robot technology.
OmniCorp’s robot drones are actively involved in fighting and winning wars around the world for America. War is big business as the drones used overseas by the military for year has contributed billions to OmniCorp’s bottom line. The robot technology is controversial amongst the civilian population, but OmniCorp wants to introduce it back home.
Here we are introduced to Alex Murphy (played by Joel Kinnaman) who is a strong, honest Detroit cop trying to fight corruption and crime. Severely injured on the job OmniCorp sees an opportunity to not only save Alex’s life, but to create a hybrid man/machine with the vision of placing a “RoboCop” in every American city. Shareholders would see incredible returns from such a plan.
We are then witness to the strength of character Alex possesses and although he is now part machine a typical small man vs big business battle ensues. Afterall, “they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice.”
Including some star pulling power from Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson and Australia’s Abbie Cornish, RoboCop is in cinemas nationally from 6th February 2014.
