Known as a quintessential Aussie actor, Michael Caton leads this unique Australian cast as Rex Macrae, a loner and a stubborn bloke. Last Cab to Darwin was co-written and directed by Jeremy Sims, most commonly known for his roles in television series such as MacLeods Daughters and Home and Away. Jeremy was inspired by the story of real life taxi driver Max Bell, who was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer in the early 1990s. When Rex is told that he has cancer and has only months to live, he decides to take his future into his own hands.
Embarking on an epic drive from his home in Broken Hill to Darwin, Rex hopes to be able to take advantage of the Northern Territory’s voluntary euthanasia laws. Despite delving into some heavy themes such as euthanasia, alcoholism and racism, the overriding issue in the film is love and companionship.
Last Cab to Darwin explores Rex’s journey of discovery as he comes to terms with his mortality as well as emotions that he has been reluctant to acknowledge. Caton shares the screen with Jacki Weaver who plays the Darwin Doctor and Ningali Lawford-Wolf who plays Polly, Rex’s love interest who lives across the road from him.
This is a road-trip film with a difference, filmed in remote locations such as Oodnadatta and Barrow Creek. Although determined to die on his own terms; Rex discovers things about himself that he didn’t know. Balanced with drama and humour, Last Cab to Darwin is sure to touch audiences through tears and laughter.
Last Cab to Darwin is in cinemas nationally 6th August
