Based on a true story, where five childhood friends hatch a plan to kidnap millionaire beer magnate Freddy Heineken and hold him for ransom in the hope of making themselves rich. Set in the 1980s in Amsterdam, the group find themselves strapped for cash when a business venture fails. Desperate to set themselves up for a future without worries, they will do virtually anything to better their financial position.

Sir Anthony Hopkins plays Mr. Heineken, a prominent local beer tycoon and heir to the Heineken empire, who is whisked with his driver, off the street by the group. Sam Worthington plays the intense character Willem Holleeder whose brother in law Cor Van Hout has been hatching this plan for years. Cor reveals his scheme to his mates, who are quickly keen to be involved.

The film follows the planning, execution and the aftermath of the kidnap plot, which resulted in the largest ransom ever paid for an individual. “It was the perfect crime…until they got away with it”.

Kidnapping Mr. Heineken is in cinemas nationally from Thursday 12th March.
