Insurgent is the second film in the Divergent trilogy, based on the novels of the same name by Veronica Roth. The prequel Divergent was in cinemas last year and the final film Allegiant is due for release in 2016. All three films take place in the same futuristic version of Chicago. Divided into five different factions based on social affiliations, these societal boundaries are designed to prevent independent thought by citizens.

Each of the factions has a single guiding virtue: Amity values peace, Erudite values intelligence, Candor values truth, Abnegation values selflessness and Dauntless values courage.

This instalment picks up as we follow Beatrice “Tris” Prior and Tobias “Four” Eaton on the run. They are being hunted by Jeanine Matthews (played by Kate Winslet) who is the leader of the Erudite faction. Determined to find out why Jeanine is so set on preventing the pair and their allies from finding out the truth about their past and the future of their world Tris fights the social structure she has always known.

Born in the Abnegation faction, Tris takes the aptitude test at 16 years old, to be told she is considered “Divergent” with an aptitude in multiple factions (Dauntless, Erudite & Abnegation) When expected to choose, she transfers to Dauntless and undergoes the initiation and training process.

Tris needs to find out why the power hungry Erudites are so resolute in pitching each faction against each other in a war like scenario, which is the opposite of their purpose.

Insurgent is in cinemas this Thursday 19th March nationally.
