Written, produced and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski of “The Matrix” fame together with Tom Tykwer, Cloud Atlas is a rollercoaster through time, weaving multi-generational stories in a potentially tricky to follow action packed romance. Starring Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon and notorious scene stealer, Australia’s Hugo Weaving, Cloud Atlas is set to play with your mind as you piece together the emotional lives of the characters that appear as different incarnations of themselves over centuries.
With multiple plot lines stretching over six eras, we are able to witness the consequences of decisions made in the past, and the impact of those decisions in the present and future. We are taken from the 19th century South Pacific through to Cambridge, England and Edinburgh, Scotland in the late 1840’s, San Francisco in 1973, the United Kingdom in 2012, Seoul, Korea in 2144 and “The Big Island” of Hawaii in approximately 2321.
The official synopsis for Cloud Atlas describes the film as: An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.
Incredibly emotional, this dramatic sci-fi flick may leave your head spinning as it’s fast pace whisks you from one century to another, and back again. This film, despite running an epic 172 minutes, may be worth a second viewing to discover elements that may slip by because of its’ non-linear nature.
One reviewer stated: “Cloud Atlas is a movie that lets you reflect about your own actions, life and existence. It is an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another - throughout the past, present and future.”
Out now in cinemas Australia wide.
